New Zealand is the youngest country in the world and this is evident as you travel through this incredibly scenic country.
There are a number of different transport methods to use, including campervan, train, coach and of course the most popular, self drive by rental car.
New Zealand is made up of 2 main islands, North Island and South Island. To get between the two you need to fly, or take the ferries that run between them. These ferries take passengers, cars or campervans and run a regular intervals.
The ferry trip itself from Wellington is very picturesque, as you travel our over the Cook Straight, through Queen Charlotte Sound, and into the very quant Picton at the top of the South Island.
There are two ferry companies which run this crossing, Blue Bridge and Inter Islander. These run from early morning into late in the evening and it is only weather that will delay the service. The total sailing time is 3 hours, but can take longer depending on the weather conditions and sea. It can get quite bumping, so if you get sea sick take some pills prior to boarding.
The cost of the ferry varies from about $60 to $80 New Zealand dollars, but a car crossing is a lot more expensive.
You can purchase your ferry tickets online with travel companies, or direct from the ferry companies. We recommend pre booking as it gets really busy in summer.
We booked ours New Zealand Ferry online with Experience New Zealand and the transaction went very smoothly, as did the aftermarket service, as we need to make a change and they were very helpful.
